Alyssa's Story

When Alyssa was just 13, she felt her world was crumbling. Living with high-functioning autism, struggling to make friends, and coping with the trauma of her father’s drug abuse and domestic violence, her self-esteem hit rock bottom. That year, she experienced her first major depressive episode and attempted to take her own life.

After time in a psychiatric hospital, Alyssa came to Mercy Family Center in 2018. At first, she was quiet and guarded. But slowly, with the compassion of therapist John Hill and psychiatrist Dr. Kim Kavanagh, Alyssa began to heal. John became a trusted friend, learning about her hobbies and dreams. Dr. Kavanagh provided therapy and medication support, and taught Alyssa’s mom how to advocate for her in school.

Over the years, Alyssa transformed from a scared, withdrawn teen into a confident young woman. Now 19, she’s a freshman at Nicholls State University, studying education so she can help children with disabilities.

“I’ve grown so much as a person, mentally, physically and emotionally,” Alyssa says. “That’s all thanks to Mercy, Dr. Kavanagh and John Hill.”

Your generosity makes stories like Alyssa’s possible. Because of our donors, uninsured and underinsured children and families can receive the mental health care services they need.
