Grateful Patient Story

In April 2024, Cooper Anthony Mercy Child Advocacy Center (CAMCAC) received a referral for a 7-year-old girl needing services after allegations of sexual abuse. When she arrived at the Center, she was bright, full of energy and quickly bonded with Duo Facility Dog, Jewel. With Jewel by her side, she felt safe enough to participate in a forensic interview where she disclosed ongoing sexual abuse by a family member living on the same property.

Following her disclosure, a medical exam was completed and a rape kit collected. Understandably, the family was in deep shock. But they weren’t alone. A CAMCAC Child Advocate immediately stepped in to offer compassionate support and connected them with CAMCAC’s specialized mental health services, made possible thanks to donor generosity.

As the investigation progressed, the family struggled to comprehend the abuse, especially because it involved someone they trusted. The child, too, began to feel the weight of her disclosure. Like many children in these circumstances, she recanted her statement — an emotionally complex and common part of the process. Despite this setback, CAMCAC remained a steady source of care and support. Staff continued meeting with the child and her family, offering emotional guidance, mental health therapy and a safe place to talk, cry and heal.

Over time, something unexpected happened: the rape kit results came back with male DNA. In child sexual abuse cases, physical evidence is rare. This confirmation brought a mix of emotions for the family. Though the alleged offender continued to deny the accusations, he was arrested and charged with rape in October 2024.
With her abuser no longer a threat, the little girl returned to CAMCAC for a third interview. This time, she courageously reaffirmed her original disclosure. She explained that she had recanted out of fear of what might happen to her family but now felt safe to tell the truth.

With ongoing therapy and frequent visits with Jewel, she and her family slowly rebuilt their sense of safety and trust. They even participated in CAMCAC’s Miracle on McAuley Court Christmas program, another donor-supported initiative that brings holiday joy to families navigating incredibly difficult times.

Today, this brave young girl has successfully completed therapy and is thriving. As the criminal trial approaches, her family has once again turned to CAMCAC for support—and we’re here for them, every step of the way. Thanks to our generous and compassionate donors, CAMCAC can continue to provide a lifeline to children and families in crisis. Your support ensures that when the unimaginable happens, healing and justice remain possible.
