On Saturday, Feb. 19, Sister Maria Luisa Vera, president of Mercy Ministries of Laredo, and Sister Rosemary Welsh, executive director of Casa de Misericordia, were honored with the prestigious Mr. South Texas Award during WBCA Laredo’s 124th Washington’s Birthday Celebration in Laredo, Texas – home to Mercy’s outreach ministries. Both Sisters have dedicated their lives to helping others.
“It is very humbling, and at the same time, there is an element of pride from this recognition,” said Sister Maria Luisa. “The Sisters of Mercy have been in Laredo for a very long time, and I feel that we are carrying on what those who have come before us began.”
“I cried, as I think it is a real honor,” said Sister Rosemary. “I have had the privilege of serving in this community for over half of my religious life since 1992.”
Sister Maria Luisa and Sister Rosemary were honored at a special luncheon on Saturday, which is one of more than 32 events in the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Calendar, which began on Jan. 20 and will conclude on Feb. 27.
