Residency Program

Mercy’s Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program provides a unique opportunity for Physical Therapists to advance their skills to become leaders in the field of Orthopedic Physical Therapy. HealthPoint Rehabilitation in conjunction with Evidence in Motion provides both the clinical and didactic education required for residency. Specifically, HealthPoint Rehabilitation will offer weekly 1-on-1 clinical mentorship with a physical therapist who is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Specialist. Through an ABPTRFE accredited curriculum lead by Evidence In Motion, the resident will satisfy the didactic requirements through a series of online and in-person coursework to become eligible for board certification.

HealthPoint Rehab’s patient satisfaction scores are ranked nationally above the 90th percentile since the inception of using Press Ganey in 2016. In 2017, 2018 and 2020, HealthPoint Rehab had the highest score for Overall Rating of Care across the nation.
HealthPoint Rehabilitation works closely with Mercy Orthopedics allowing residents the opportunity to participate in physician shadowing and surgery observation
Southeast Missouri State University Collegiate Athletics and Performing Arts receive healthcare exclusively from Mercy.

Goals

Provide mentorship to enhance skills in the treatment and evaluation of musculoskeletal conditions
Promote opportunities for growth in knowledge of evidence-based practice, orthopedic manual therapy techniques, and advanced medical screening
Prepare residents to achieve the Orthopedic Certified Specialist (OCS) certification from the ABPTS and to be a leader in the orthopedic physical therapy field.

Program Structure

Clinic Structure
Clinic hours are scheduled to fit resident, mentor, and clinic needs. Residents will need to complete 32 hours of direct patient care hours, with an additional 8 hours to complete residency coursework and physician shadowing. Patient evaluations are scheduled for 60 minutes and patients are scheduled every 30-45 minutes.
Education Structure
Residents will need to complete a minimum of 150 hours of direct 1:1 clinical mentorship and receive mentor evaluations at 20, 50, 100, and 150 hours. Two live patient initial evaluation examinations will need to be completed; one spine and one extremity. Residents will be required to complete both online and in-person weekend intensives through Evidence in Motion.
NOTE: HealthPoint Rehabilitation does not provide funds for travel or hotel costs for these courses.

Admission Information

Applications are in coordination with Evidence in Motion (EIM) deadlines and requirements. The applicant must first apply for the resident position at Mercy. All accepted applicants will be assisted in applying for the residency program through Evidence in Motion. All application requirements and acceptance into the Residency Program at Mercy need to be complete prior to the following EIM deadlines:
- Spring Cohort: February 1 (Program starts second Monday in March)
- Summer Cohort: June 1 (Program starts second Monday in July)
- Fall Cohort: August 1 (Program starts second Monday in September)
- Winter Cohort: December 1 (Program starts second Monday in January)
Evidence In Motion Admission Requirements
1. All applicants must have successfully completed a CAPTE-accredited professional physical therapy curriculum or have had a state physical therapy board approve the applicant’s first post-professional physical therapy program as “equivalent” to a U.S. CAPTE-accredited physical therapy program.
2. All applicants must provide a copy of a current and valid license to practice physical therapy in one of the 50 United States, Canada, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands. This license must be in good standing.
3. All residents must carry professional liability insurance. This can be a personal policy or company policy.
4. If English is not the applicant’s native/first language, specified language proficiency requirements must be met.
5. All residents must be active members of the APTA.
