In preparation for the 18th annual Miracle on McAuley Court Christmas Program Distribution, Serene Garcia, an advocate at the Cooper-Anthony Mercy Child Advocacy Center (CAMCAC), spent weeks collecting names of children who could benefit from the organization’s holiday outreach program for clients in need.
As she sifted through the names, ages and clothing sizes, she couldn’t help but notice one client in particular, a 16-year-old girl who had recently received CAMCAC services. The teen was 21 weeks pregnant during her interview at the center.
“This client’s demeanor was warm and friendly during intake,” said Taylor May, supervisor of prevention and community education. “She was excited about being pregnant and mentioned having morning sickness.”
Fast forward to early November, the girl is due to give birth with a high-risk pregnancy at hand.
When CAMCAC advocates found out the girl had nothing ahead of her child’s arrival, volunteers and the community teamed up with CAMCAC staff to help. Together, with Women with a Mission, the group hosted a baby shower for the teen with hopes of providing love and support during a difficult season in life.
“I wrote out an email and sent it to our team,” said Serene. “Their response was immediate. People signed up to bring baby clothes, diapers, wipes, play things, blankets and even some self-care items for our client.”
Women with a Mission members also helped purchase baby monitors, a diaper genie, stroller and a car seat. They also reached out to several businesses in the community who have have been faithful sponsors when the center has needs, including Grow/Doodlebugs Children’s Boutique, who also stepped up to help.
The gifts piled high at the center until the team loaded them up for delivery just in time for the baby’s arrival. The client was incredibly moved for this outpouring of support. She delivered a healthy baby and later brought the infant by during the center’s annual Christmas party to meet the staff and graciously thank the team for their care and compassion.
